In journalism, a powerful photograph can communicate what thousands of words cannot. Behind many significant images in Bangladesh stands veteran photojournalist Indrajit Kumer Ghosh, whose decades-long career has been shaped by courage, perseverance, professional integrity and an unwavering commitment to visual journalism.

Currently serving as Chief Photojournalist of The Daily Khaborer Kagoj, Ghosh has established himself as a respected professional within Bangladesh’s media industry. His journey is also rooted in a distinguished family legacy. He is the son of the late Ram Kanai Ghosh, a renowned Bangladeshi photojournalist. Inspired by his father’s profession, Indrajit developed an early passion for photography and eventually transformed that interest into a lifelong vocation.

Born in Old Dhaka, with ancestral roots in Goalpara, Rikabibazar, Munshiganj, Ghosh entered professional photography following the sudden passing of his father. With support from his father’s friend Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, he began by covering handball matches. His commitment and determination soon brought him opportunities in mainstream journalism. Encouraged by Ataul Haq Mallick, he received his first major professional opportunity with the daily Ajker Awaj, marking the beginning of an enduring career in news photography.

Over the years, Ghosh has worked with several prominent Bangladeshi media organizations, including Ajker Kagoj, The News Today, Janakantha, New Age, Ajker Patrika and Protidiner Bangladesh. His professional development was strengthened by the guidance of experienced journalists and mentors, particularly Abu Taher Khokon, whose advice proved valuable throughout his career. Senior photojournalist Akhter Hossain has likewise remained an important source of encouragement and support for Ghosh and his family.

Recognition for Visual Journalism

Ghosh’s contribution to photojournalism has earned recognition at both national and international levels. He completed a basic professional course at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), further strengthening his technical and professional foundation.

Among his notable achievements is the second prize in the Ruposhi Bangla photo competition, alongside a United Nations award for environmental photography. His commitment to socially significant visual storytelling was further recognized in 2025, when he received the UNFPA End Child Marriage Award for his work highlighting the issue of child marriage.

He was also honored by the Journalist Welfare Trust under the Ministry of Information as an injured journalist on the anniversary of the July Uprising. In 2026, his professional achievements received further recognition through the Imperial Photojournalist Achievement Award, acknowledging his enduring contribution to visual journalism.

Leadership Beyond the Newsroom

Ghosh’s contribution extends beyond his newsroom responsibilities. He is a permanent member of the National Press Club and the Bangladesh Photojournalists Association. He has served the association in several leadership positions, including Organizing Secretary and Joint Secretary, before becoming President of its Executive Committee for the 2023–2025 term.

Through his camera, Ghosh has documented public life, social transformation and human experiences with courage and professional responsibility. His journey—from a young photographer inspired by his father to an accomplished chief photojournalist and professional leader—reflects perseverance, service and excellence.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to journalism, fearless visual storytelling and leadership within the photojournalism community, Indrajit Kumer Ghosh stands as a deserving recipient of the Asian Professional Achievement Award 2026 – Excellence in Photojournalism.
